In this picture you will see typical New York; big buildings, crowded streets and a harbor. But there is something in the middle of those two skyscrapers that stands out: a Christian memorial to the past. This building was built for the first “American saint.” It had to stand through the construction of those two huge buildings and the destruction of the previous ones. It sticks out as different, aged, and out of date. But it represents values the other buildings do not. It represents love, faith, and commitment.
Although I don’t agree with the Catholic religion I enjoyed seeing a memento of faith. In the commotion of a city that represents greed, lust, and dog-eat-dog mentalities stands a reminder of the peace we can have in Christ. “Even among all of the worlds trials, fears, and changes a Christian can stand strong because of his trust in God.” That is what this building says to me.
While walking through the financial district in NY I noticed many of the well dressed business people did not look happy. They seemed stressed… And hollow. I remembered stories of suicides taking place in one of the buildings during the stock market crash. These wealthy men and women lived and died by their success financially. New York is a place where personal kingdoms rise and fall.
I was not impressed by New York City, although I had fun observing the city. I have little money, no car, not even a girlfriend, but I am thoroughly enjoying my life! Why? God has given me purpose. As best as I can, I am fulfilling God’s purpose for my life.
No matter what happens I can stand strong knowing God is in control. No matter how the world and culture changes God will not change. Jesus is the same yesterday and today and forever. The Bible is still truth no matter what new philosophies and ideas rise in society. I’m not dependent on money, fame, or comfort. I am following God.
Just like that building I hope to stand out and stand strong. Not as old fashioned or odd, but as a representation of commitment to love and faith in God. I want to be a lasting representation of Jesus.
1 Corinthians 16:13-14 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. Let all your things be done with charity.
